What is trauma?

“Trauma results from exposure to an incident or series of events that are emotionally disturbing or life-threatening with lasting adverse effects on the individual’s functioning and mental, physical, social, emotional, and/or spiritual well-being.”.
Centre for Health Care Strategies

Trauma Therapy will benefit you by:-

  • shifting the focus from “What’s wrong with you” to “What’s happened to you”
  • recognising the widespread impact that trauma has had on you
  • recognises the signs and symptoms of your trauma
  • offering an understanding to your recovery paths
  • And, it actively avoids re-traumatisation.

What types of Trauma Therapy do we Practice?

* EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing

EMDR is a form of psychotherapy used in the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress (PTSD). As a result of this treatment you can be healed from the symptoms and emotional distress resulting from disturbing life experiences. EMDR enables the mind to heal in the same way in which the body recovers from physical trauma, for example when you cut your hand the body works to heal the wound.  A similar sequence applies: "the brain’s information-processing system naturally moves toward mental health.  If the system is blocked or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering.  Once the block is removed, healing resumes."

* CBT - Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

CBT is a form of therapy used to treat a range of problems such as depression, anxiety disorders, alcohol and drug use problems, marital problems, eating disorders, and severe mental illness.

More information on CBT

The theory behind CBT is that your thoughts impact your feelings which in turn impact your behaviours. CBT treatment can help deconstruct that interaction by re-framing your thoughts, this then helps to alleviate anxieties which will result in improving your quality of life.

CBT Fact Sheet

CBT treatment involves efforts to change thinking patterns. The strategies for this might be in:

  • Learning to recognise distortions in thinking that are creating problems and re-evaluate them in reality.
  • Gaining a better understanding of the behaviour and motivation of others.
  • Using problem-solving skills to cope with difficult situations.
  • Developing a greater sense of confidence in one’s own abilities.
